All about Somerset

campsite and programme areas

Somerset first acquired and developed land in the Colo Valley in 1979, and has been working consistently since to expand and develop more programming areas for our camps. Our Base Camp of over 350 acres provides our logistical base, as well as accommodation for our staff and management. In addition, three key programming areas have been developed, and integrated into our camps:

Upper Primary Adventure

Base Camp – Our Base Camp, a camping area for groups is well supported with facilities. The floodlit camping area is adjacent to hot showers and undercover areas for poor weather. Also nearby is Somerset House, a teacher’s cottage, providing facilities for taking a break, and accommodation for additional and supervising teachers.

Lower Secondary Peer Support Camps

Uralba – Somerset has established 14 campsites, stretching over 25 km’s of the Colo Valley, all on private land, and all set up in the same manner. Each has a shelter area, tables, a campfire circle, composting toilet with running water, firewood supply, and a grassy area for camping. These campsites also feature our Uralba Teachers tents, a safari type tent elevated on a wooden platform, with a low bed and chair, to ensure that teachers are able to fully participate in these programmes.

Secondary Challenge Programmes

Expedition – Supporting our developed sites is licensed access to Wollemi National Park, with a variety of walking routes and stunning remote campsites, providing the means for us to extend our programmes for older groups and Duke of Edinburgh Award participants.
