ORIC Conference - Keeping People Outdoors
On the weekend of the 21st and 22nd August, the Outdoor Recreation Industry Council (ORIC) held their annual Conference; where Industry leaders gather to run workshops and presentations for members of the Outdoor Industry. This year’s theme was ‘Keeping People Outdoors’.
Somerset sent 7 staff members along to participate in the workshops and listen to the keynote presenters. Many subjects were covered, creating many choices for the delegates to make! From discussions about Wilderness First Aid and Rescues; to theories on how to facilitate groups; from Leave No Trace Principles; to how to bring Aboriginal Culture into Programmes and other useful information for outdoor types!
Among the delegates were Outdoor Education and Recreation Leaders/Instructors and Administration staff, Scout and Girl Guide Leaders, Representatives from TAFE NSW and various Universities, such as the University of Wollongong and other independent fields and companies associated with the Outdoor Recreation Industry

On Saturday night, the Industry Awards were presented for ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Industry’, and the ‘Young and Inspiring Trainee Outdoor Educator’.
This is an important opportunity in the outdoor industry to recognise those that make the industry special; learn from our peers and network with each other to ensure the continued growth of this special industry.
