All about Somerset

programmes

Programmes at Somerset are developed in line with our schools, and their intended outcomes. Programmes are also fine-tuned over the years with our schools, through a process of evaluation and constant improvement. 2009 saw many schools undertaking their 30th year of camps with Somerset.

All Somerset school programmes operate with the year group being divided into groups of around 16, each accompanied by a school teacher, and lead by a Somerset Group Leader. The group completes a journey throughout the programme area, undertaking various activities along the way.

A broad description of some available programme themes is outlined below:

Upper Primary Adventure

Upper Primary Adventure – Somerset provide an outstanding ‘Peak Experience’ for upper primary years, encompassing a range of journey based activities, punctuated with adventurous and challenge activities to create a lasting positive memory in these important years.

Lower Secondary Peer Support Camps

Lower Secondary Peer Support Camps – This critical time, early in a student’s high school life, can be a powerful time for Outdoor Education. Various team building and developmental activities are well framed in a programme structured around small groups and interaction amongst the year group.

Secondary Challenge Programmes

Upper Secondary Challenge Programmes – During this pivotal period in secondary schooling, the power of a challenging Outdoor Education experience, can be formative in development of the individual. Somerset provides a range of journey based programmes aimed at extending and developing students them based on an action and consequence experience. These programmes, typically 4 – 5 days in length see groups completing a canoeing and hiking journey punctuated with various activities, and focused on self reliance as well as group cohesion.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Expeditions – Somerset also provides expeditions for Duke of Edinburgh Award Participants, across the Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels. Our expeditions are run either for open registration during the school holidays, or as a school specific booking throughout the term. We also are able to embed an expedition, particularly at the bronze level, within a year level programme at Somerset. Click here for more information about Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions
